DETalk–Greg Kyte–Finding Your Passion

Ed Kless - 08/15/2011

In her DETalk, associate at John Chisholm Consulting, Jess Hadley posits that the only problem with value pricing is that not enough people know about it. It’s not quantum physics, in fact it makes complete sense even to people who have never read a business book in their life. So, how is it that many professionals don’t even know that there is a valid alternative to the dated and dehumanizing practices associated with the time-based billing model?

DETalks - Kurt Siemers - Report from a Top 100 Firm

Ed Kless - 06/28/2011

Kurt Siemers, CEO of Top 100 CPA firm, Kennedy and Coe, shares the story of how he and his fellow partners are making the transition to becoming a Firm of the Future. In his DETalk he shares six key elements that have helped them during this journey.

  1. Our Value Creation Process is an operations model that is guided by our Mission of “enhancing the well being of our people and the clients we serve”, as well as a way to demonstrate our positioning statement of “Genuine People. Creative Ideas. Valuable Results.”
  2. Our firm has always believed in creating value for clients. The Value Creation Process helps us walk the talk.
  3. To enhance the well being of both our people and clients over the long-term, we must create value for each of our clients and be paid on the basis of that value. Without doing both, our ability to continually bring value to our clients will be lost.
  4. It is critical to be genuine with our clients at all times so we both understand each others expectations-this is a foundational piece of a long- term caring relationship that is imbedded in our value creation process.
  5. Once we were able to accept that an hours worth of work does not define the value of what may have accomplished for a client, were able to be more creative in seeing more ways to create value for our clients.
  6. Discussing value with our clients helps both of us more effectively understand what is valuable to the client and that helps both of us contribute to the quality of the relationship.

DETalk - Tim Williams - Emotion Not Logic

Ed Kless - 06/20/2011

Tim Williams is founder of Ignition Consulting Group. As a recognized thought leader in marketing, he is a frequent speaker and presenter for industry associations, agency networks, universities, and business conferences both here and abroad. He is author of the book, Take a Stand for Your Brand ranked by Amazon as one of the top ten books on brand building. Tim’s newest book, Positioning for Professionals was recently published by John Wiley & Sons.

DETalk—W Michael Hsu-Struggling with Your Why

Ed Kless - 06/13/2011

W. Michael Hsu of DeepSky talks about his personal struggle while searching for his (and his company’s) Why.

In this DETalk he explains the process that he went through to discover that his personal Why - to provide the younger generation the means and support to be great - was not just inline, but also inseparable, with his company’s Why - to provide entrepreneurs with the knowledge and confidence to be great.

He further suggested that the role of professional knowledge firms should really be seen as becoming the How to their customer’s Why.

DETalk—Matthew Burgess-eLawyer

Ed Kless - 06/06/2011

In the third DETalks, Matthem Burgess shares with us his journey that led him to found eLawyer.

The convergence of value pricing with true technology innovation has forced many to revisit the ‘traditional’ delivery of legal services.

In the estate planning space, many components of the process that have historically been fiercely guarded by lawyers can in reality be provided far more effectively by other advisers, particularly accountants, financial planners and risk advisers.

eLawyer is an innovative web based law firm developed by one of the largest Australian independent law firms and the only large law firm to have a dedicated and continuous estate planning focus for over 50 years.

In this DET, managing director Matthew Burgess provides a snapshot of the framework explaining why elawyer was developed.

DETalk–Tom Hood-Finding Your Edge

Ed Kless - 05/23/2011

In this the second of about two dozen DETalks, Tom Hood, executive director of the Maryland Association of CPAs, talks about finding your edge in the “new normal.”

He lays out the idea that we are experiencing not just a great recession, but the “death of the industrial age.” He posits that we are in the midst of some major fundamental shifts. The biggest shift is going from command and control to connect and collaborate or from push to pull.

Tom suggests that the best path forward is to work to re-engage people in your organization’s purpose, your Why and develop a positive, winning culture that helps people and the organization to flourish.

Tom has been the executive director and CEO of the Maryland Association of CPAs since January 1997. Armed with a passion for the profession and the drive to move it forward, Hood manages a staff of more than 30, works closely with the executive committee and Board of Directors and oversees the work of numerous committees to promote and protect the CPA brand in Maryland.

Introducing The DETalks–Dan Morris

Ed Kless - 05/15/2011

In January 2011, the VeraSage Institute held its second symposium of cofounders, senior fellows, practicing fellows and some close friends.

imageThe centerpiece of the gathering were the six-minute talks to be delivered by each of the participants. As you will see in the below video, these talks were quickly dubbed the DETalks. In addition to being an anagram of the famous TEDtalks, DET began as a pun on debt. However, Senior Fellow Tim Williams quickly created an acronym, Disruptive, Evocative and Transformative.

Over the next 20-odd weeks we will be posting one of these talks we hope you will find that they live up to that acronym.

First up, VeraSage Institute cofounder Dan Morris presents his talk 6542 in which he gives the DETalks their name. He provides us with some humorous insights as to what working in the VeraSage Institute is like as well as some poignant metaphors as to why our group does the work that it does.

Enjoy! We hope you will comment and pass these around.
